Sanhok Map Release (2018)
Dense jungle, faster circles, and a whole new rhythm for the last circle.
Sanhok is the third battle-royale map in PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds, released by Bluehole Studio (now Krafton) in 2018 as part of a major seasonal content update. Where Erangel offered temperate farmland and Miramar delivered arid desert expanse, Sanhok dropped players onto a humid tropical island choked with dense jungle canopy, winding rivers, and tightly clustered settlements. Its smaller footprint and thick foliage fundamentally shifted the pace of matches, favoring close-quarters engagements and rapid rotations over the long-range duels that defined the two earlier maps.
The map's introduction in 2018 marked a significant expansion of PUBG's competitive and casual landscape. By adding a distinct biome and a faster match tempo, Sanhok gave teams a new strategic canvas and gave the player base a fresh environment to master, cementing PUBG's identity as a franchise willing to diversify its arenas well beyond a single island.

Lore & Background
Sanhok is depicted as a remote tropical island where the jungle reclaims every structure faster than the next season's rains wash away the last. The canopy is so thick that sunlight reaches the forest floor in scattered shafts, and the rivers that cut across the map carry the smell of wet earth and overripe fruit. Settlements here are small—clustered huts, a military training ground, a few concrete outposts—easily swallowed by vines if left unattended for even a few weeks.
In the game's narrative framing, Sanhok sits outside the primary conflict zones of Erangel and Miramar. It is a place where the Battle Royale event occasionally spills over, and where the dense undergrowth makes long-range sniping nearly impossible. The map's identity is one of humidity, speed, and concealment: players move through waist-high grass, cross narrow river fords, and fight in the dappled light of a jungle that seems to close in as the blue zone shrinks.
Compared to the open fields of Erangel or the sweeping dunes of Miramar, Sanhok feels claustrophobic and alive. Every rustle in the foliage could be a player, a stray animal, or the wind. This constant ambiguity of sound and sight became the map's defining character in both the community's memory and the competitive meta.
In Their Own Story
The circle snapped tight over the river bend, and the water hissed where the blue edge licked the mud. Kael crouched behind a rusted truck, the jungle pressing close on every side—ferns brushing his helmet, the air thick enough to taste. Two players were already down in the grass to his left; he could hear them breathing through the static in his earpiece. He had one magazine left in his SMG and a single grenade. The canopy above filtered the late-afternoon sun into a green glow, and somewhere beyond the treeline, a third squad was rotating in, boots crunching on wet leaves. He counted to three, rolled the grenade, and moved. The jungle swallowed the sound of the explosion almost before it finished.
Reader's Guide
When Sanhok dropped in 2018, the first thing players noticed was the clock. Matches ran noticeably shorter. The smaller map meant the blue zone contracted faster and the final circles landed in tighter pockets, so the long, patient mid-game rotations that defined Erangel and Miramar simply didn't exist here. You were in a gunfight by minute twelve, not minute twenty-five.
The dense vegetation reshaped weapon priorities overnight. Long-range rifles lost a chunk of their dominance because the canopy broke up sightlines and the close-quarters engagements punished slow-aiming players. SMGs, shotguns, and even close-range LMGs saw a surge in pick rates. Teams that had built their entire loadout around a 7.62 sniper found themselves scrambling to adapt.
In the competitive scene, Sanhok became a wildcard. Coaches had to rethink rotation timing—there was less room to play it safe, and a single mistimed push through a jungle corridor could cost you the round. Teams that excelled at fast, coordinated close-range fights and aggressive zone prediction climbed the rankings, while others that relied on holding long angles struggled. The map added a genuine strategic layer to tournaments: picking your weapon loadout and positioning style for Sanhok was a different problem than for Erangel, and that variety kept the meta from settling into a single optimal build.
Community reaction was broadly enthusiastic. Players who had grown tired of the same open-field duels welcomed the change of pace. Content creators flooded the space with jungle-camping tips, river-crossing strategies, and close-quarters movement drills. The map's humid, green aesthetic also gave PUBG a visual identity it hadn't had before, and for many players, Sanhok became the map they opened the game on simply because it felt different.
Did You Know?
- Sanhok's smaller map size means matches complete in a noticeably shorter time than Erangel or Miramar, compressing the entire battle-royale arc into fewer minutes.
- The dense jungle foliage on Sanhok significantly limits effective sightlines, making it the most favorable map in PUBG for close-range weapons like SMGs and shotguns.
- Sanhok was the third map added to PUBG, following Erangel and Miramar, and was one of the first major content additions to expand the game's variety of biomes.
- The map's tropical setting introduced a distinct visual and audio identity—thicker ambient sound, different footstep textures on wet ground and foliage—that players quickly learned to use for positioning cues.
